New York, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The National Basketball Association announced
several rule changes that will be implemented for the 2006-07 season on
Wednesday, including a new playoff seeding system to alter a format widely
considered flawed.
Last season, Dallas was seeded fourth despite having the second best record in
the West, and therefor drew top-seeded San Antonio in the conference
semifinals. To ensure that the two teams with the conference's best records do
not meet earlier than the Conference Finals again, the three division winners
and the team with the next best record will be seeded according to their
regular-season marks. Previously, the division winners were automatically
awarded the top three playoff spots.
The NBA Board of Governors also cut down on timeouts. If a team has two 60
second timeouts remaining in the last two minutes of regulation or in
overtime, one of those two timeouts will be shortened to 20 seconds.
Also, teams will now have two 60-second timeouts and one 20 in overtime rather
than three 60-second timeouts, and are no longer able to carry over a leftover
20 into overtime.
Finally, the NBA decided to increase the playoff roster size from 13 to 15,
with each team designating 12 active players and up to three inactive players
before each game.
"Our owners are intent on making the playoff seeding more fair for all teams
going forward and in quickening the pace of the end of games," said Stu
Jackson, NBA executive vice president of basketball operations. "The Board
also thought it made sense to allow teams to utilize the same 15-man roster in
the playoffs that they use during the regular season."
