Celtics jockey for playoff position vs. Knicks

Basketball Betting Lines

04/06/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Boston Celtics are still fighting for playoff positioning and will face a familiar foe tonight in the Atlantic Division- rival New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Boston sits fourth in the Eastern Conference, just a game behind Atlanta for the No. 3 spot, and is aiming for its second season sweep of the Knicks in three years. It has won the first three matchups of 2009-10, four straight overall and 20 of the last 24 meetings between the teams. The Celtics, who just went 3-3 on a six-game homestand, have won two straight and 14 of 17 trips to New York.

The Celtics are coming off an impressive home win versus the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, as Ray Allen scored 33 points on 6-of-9 from three-point range in a 117-113 triumph in Beantown. Kevin Garnett added 19 points, while both Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce scored 16 for Boston, which put the brakes on a rare three-game losing streak despite blowing a 22-point advantage.

"A lot of energy today," said Garnett. "It had all the makings of the playoff atmosphere. I could just feel it. We needed this game. It was a dogfight."

Atlantic champion Boston will also pay a visit to Toronto and is 24-13 as the guest in 2009-10.

New York is back in the Big Apple after going 1-4 on a five-game road trip which was salvaged with a 113-107 triumph against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday from Staples Center.

The Knicks ended a four-game slide in Hollywood, as David Lee had 29 points and Al Harrington chipped in 26 in a winning effort. Bill Walker produced 18 points and Toney Douglas 13 for New York, which had lost 10 straight on the road in this series with its last victory coming back on March 25, 1998.

"We had a tough road trip and to get this one tonight gives us a little momentum for our final games," said Lee, who also had 10 rebounds for his third consecutive 20/10 performance.

Lee became first Knick since legend Patrick Ewing from 1991-93 to register back-to-back 50 double-double seasons. Lee is averaging 26.3 points, 13.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists in three games against Boston this season.

In injury news for the Knicks, guard Tracy McGrady is questionable for Tuesday due to a sore left knee. McGrady did not play in the win over the Clippers.

Brandon Roy Favorite to Win 2007 NBA Rookie of the Year

Portland TrailBlazer’s guard, Brandon Roy, is MySportsbook.com’s overwhelming favorite to win the NBA Rookie of the Year odds.

Despite missing 20 games due to an injury earlier this season, Roy has definitely put up the best numbers of his 1st year peers. In 32 games, Roy is averaging 15.3 PPG, 4.2 boards and 3.5 assists in over 33 minutes of play per game. While most rookies breakdown as the season progresses (see Morrison), Roy is only getting stronger as his playing time and scoring average has increased each month.

With 30 or so games left in the regular season, Roy isn’t a lock for the award by any means. Other rookies are putting together some pretty impressive campaigns and a few could give Roy a run for the award with increased playing time. Heading the list is first pick, Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors. Even though he has started only two games all season, Bargnani is averaging 10.3 PPPG while shooting 35% from deep.

Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves could be set to give Roy the best competition NBA Rookie of the Year betting lines. With the benching of Mike James, Foye looks like he could be the starter in the T-Wolves backcourt for the rest of the season. So far, Foye has averaged 9 PPG and 2.4 assists in just under 21 minutes per game. With his new role of starter, Foye’s numbers will definitely increase. In his first game as the new starting guard this past Sunday, Foye had 10 points; five rebounds and 8 assists. More importantly, he logged 34 minutes of playing time; his third highest run of the season.

Adam Morrison, of the Charlotte Bobcats, was the favorite early on in the season after averaging 15+ PPG through the first month of the season. Ever since his torrid start, Morrison’s point production has declined each month. This really isn’t surprising, considering at 6’8” he only weighs 205 lbs. Obviously he will need to hit the weights big time during the off-season in order to keep from breaking down in the future.
