Cards, Penny shoot for a sweep in Cincinnati

Baseball Betting Lines

04/08/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - It may be only two games into the season, but the St. Louis Cardinals are quickly living up to their early billing as the team to beat in the National League Central.

The defending division champions will attempt to finish off a three-game sweep of the Cincinnati Reds when the clubs wrap up their series this afternoon at Great American Ball Park.

St. Louis belted four homers, including two off the bat of reigning NL MVP Albert Pujols, in Monday's 11-6 defeat of the Reds, then scored four times in the seventh inning en route to a 6-3 triumph in Wednesday's middle test of this set. Pujols, who had four hits in the opener, snapped a 2-2 tie with an RBI single that began the seventh-inning outburst.

Matt Holliday followed Pujols' hit with a two-run double and finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while David Freese also had two hits and knocked in a pair of runs to help back seven solid innings out of Cards starter Adam Wainwright.

Wainwright, who led the NL with a career-best 19 wins a year ago, held Cincinnati to two runs and three hits while striking out six batters.

"[Wednesday] I was able to work around the zone pretty good," Wainwright said. "I mixed up pitches for strikes when I needed to. It was a good day."

Johnny Cueto pitched well for the Reds despite not factoring in the decision, allowing two runs on five hits over the first six innings.

"He had a couple long innings there where he didn't give up much," Reds manager Dusty Baker said of Cueto. "He kept us in the game."

Orlando Cabrera accounted for all three Cincinnati runs, belting a two-run homer off Wainwright in the sixth and adding an RBI double in the eighth.

Today's game marks the Cardinals debut of Brad Penny, signed by the club to a one-year contract in December after spending last season with Boston and San Francisco. The two-time All-Star did his best work in the NL as a member of the Giants, posting a 4-1 record and an excellent 2.59 earned run average in six September starts after joining that team for the stretch drive.

Penny made 30 starts overall last season and went 11-9 with a 4.88 ERA while pitching a total of 173 1/3 innings. The two-time 16-game winner was brought in to fill the rotation spot of Joel Pineiro, who left via free agency over the winter after recording 15 victories for the defending NL Central champions.

The 31-year-old Penny did not face the Reds last year, but owns an impressive 7-2 mark with a 3.36 in 12 lifetime starts against Cincinnati. He's also won all five of his career assignments at Great American Ball Park and pitched to a 1.91 ERA over those games.

Cincinnati will pin its hopes on Bronson Arroyo, who's coming off another solid season with the Reds. The eccentric righty won 15 games for the second consecutive year, while his 3.84 ERA in 2009 was nearly a full run less than his previous campaign.

Arroyo was particularly tough in the second half, when he registered an outstanding 2.24 ERA over 15 starts and held enemy hitters to a .223 average. He finished off the year with a gem against the Cardinals at Great American Ball Park, where the veteran yielded just one run and four hits over 8 1/3 innings in leading Cincy to a 6-1 triumph.

The 33-year-old is just 6-8 with a 4.54 over 22 career appearances (20 starts) versus St. Louis, however.

These two divisional foes split 16 encounters a year ago, with the Reds winning five of the nine games held in Cincinnati.

MySportsbook.com and Kentucky Derby Offer Bonuses
The 2008 Kentucky Derby has announced a $1-million bonus for this weekend’s 134th ‘Run for the Roses’ and MySportsbook.com is doing the same.

Well, not quite $1 million, but MySportsbook.com is offering a 75% rebate for Kentucky Derby lines. Check out the exclusive horse racing bonus for all the details.

According to MySportsbook.com, the favorites for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky are: Curlin (+250); Street Sense (+500); Scat Daddy (+700); Circular Quay (+750); and Nobiz Like Shobiz (+800).

Derby organizers announced this week that there will be a $1-million bonus at the 2007 Kentucky Derby odds if the first-place horse wins by more than 6 1/2 lengths – the margin of Barbaro's victory last year. The bonus would be divided Saturday among the winning trainer, jockey, owner and a charity, with each receiving 25 percent. The designated charity is the Barbaro Memorial Fund.

''It's certainly creative, it's certainly fun and it has something for the horsemen, which we always want to embrace,'' Churchill Downs president and chief executive Robert Evans said at a news conference. ''What's really cool is it will force us to remember Barbaro.''

Meanwhile, the Derby favorite – Curlin – is going against the odds this year. It's been 125 years since Apollo won after skipping his 2-year-old season, and not since Regret in 1915 has such a lightly seasoned horse worn the blanket of red roses.

Arkansas Derby winner Curlin – unbeaten in three career races – tries to overcome both those obstacles in Saturday's 133rd Derby.

''We're not running against history,'' trainer Steve Asmussen said Monday. ''We're running against who they load up.''

Six other horses have run in the Derby without benefit of 2-year-old races and with three or fewer starts. The best any of them managed was a sixth-place finish by Showing Up last year.

Asmussen dismissed suggestions that Curlin's lack of racing experience could keep him from the winner's circle.

”He exudes confidence and he's got a great presence about him,'' the trainer said. ''I feel great about the position we're in. He's not worried about anything, why should you be?''

The Kentucky Derby is at 4:04 p.m., ET Saturday.
